Graham—Dixon writes somewhere about Buonarotti resembling Dante, in that he ‘had little interest in entering into and genuinely sympathizing with the lives of other people’—and hence, an art of powerful abstractions, highly symbolic; the comparison is far stretched, I believe him, G—D, to be misguided—as Dante was a genuinely realist artist, not unlike Donatello.
